Really cold. Have you tried swimming in these river deltas? Or even just crossing one barefoot? Your feet will hate you. They will emit the most insane burning sensation of wanting to leave your body, before realising they’re still stuck to you, so instead they just turn off after that minute of suffering, and you won’t notice them anymore. That’s how cold this cold is.
Freshly off the main ice cap of Iceland and Europe’s favourite glacier, Vatnajökull, this river tries to go everywhere in search of lonely oceans in need of company. So it spreads and spreads. But the black volcanic sand has been here longer. It takes pride in its loosely put-together claim to the land. And at some point, it fights back. Making it clear to the rivers that they are not welcome past here. And pushes them further downstream.
